Al Qaeda: The End of a Legend?
Wherever there is Counterinsurgency, there are "Al Qaeda Affiliated Organizations"

Throughout the post 9/11 era, Al Qaeda and the "threat of Islamic terrorism" have played a central role in defining Washington's diplomatic agenda, shaping its rhetoric at World summits as well as establishing the contours of US military doctrine.
The pre-emptive "defensive war" doctrine against Al Qaeda and its alleged "State Sponsors" constitutes the foundation of America's post 9/11 National Security Strategy (NSS), first formulated in early 2002.
In the wake of 9/11, the Al Qaeda Legend became part of the mainstay of US foreign policy. Contained in the 2002 NSS is the notion of a "global jihadist  network of terrorists" and "state sponsors of terrorism". The response of the US administration is to launch "a war of global reach", a "Global War on Terrorism" (GWOT):
"The war against terrorists of global reach is a global enterprise of uncertain duration. ...America will act against such emerging threats before they are fully formed.
...Rogue states and terrorists do not seek to attack us using conventional means. They know such attacks would fail. Instead, they rely on acts of terror and, potentially, the use of weapons of mass destruction (...)

The targets of these attacks are our military forces and our civilian population, in direct violation of one of the principal norms of the law of warfare. As was demonstrated by the losses on September 11, 2001, mass civilian casualties is the specific objective of terrorists and these losses would be exponentially more severe if terrorists acquired and used weapons of mass destruction.

The United States has long maintained the option of preemptive actions to counter a sufficient threat to our national security. The greater the threat, the greater is the risk of inaction— and the more compelling the case for taking anticipatory action to defend ourselves, (...). To forestall or prevent such hostile acts by our adversaries, the United States will, if necessary, act preemptively." The underlying objective of the 2002 NSS was to present "pre-emptive military action" --meaning war as an act of "self-defense" against two categories of enemies, "Rogue States" and "Islamic terrorists", both of which were said to possess "Weapons of Mass Destruction". The "Rogue States" are also defined as "State sponsors" of terrorism. The 2002 NSS as well as subsequent National Security documents identified a list of "Axis of Evil" countries which had been singled out for preemptive military intervention under the "Global War on Terrorism". These included Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Libya, North Korea.

While former enemies Russia and China of the Cold War era were not officially designated as part of the "Axis of Evil", they were, nonetheless, included (in several military documents) in the list of targetted countries for military intervention.

From the outset in 2001, a vast Public Relations campaign was launched by the Pentagon with a view to shaping and manipulating World public opinion. The PR stunt consisted in leaking reports on links or relations between Al Qaeda and its alleged State sponsors (e.g. How Saddam was supporting bin Laden, etc). The objective was to justify preemptive military actions against countries which were "harboring the terrorists".
There was no truth or rationale in these statements emanating from higher authority. "Going after Bin Laden" became part of an unbending consensus. Fear and insecurity prevailed over common sense. What we are dealing with is an outright and blind acceptance of the structures of power and political authority. In the wake of 9/11
In the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Afghanistan was accused of harboring Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the alleged mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. Afghanistan was identified as a "state sponsor of terror". The 9/11 attacks were categorized as an act of war, an attack on America by a foreign power. The right to self-defense was put forth. The US-NATO aggressor was portrayed as the victim.

On September 12, less than 24 hours after the attacks, NATO invoked for the first time in its history "Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - its collective defence clause" declaring the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and the Pentagon "to be an attack against all NATO members."
There was foreknowledge of 9/11. Military analysts will confirm that the war on Afghanistan launched on October 7, 2001, was planned well in advance of 9/11.

Public opinion was led to believe that war preparations got underway on September 12th on the spare of the moment, that it was the result of indignation and outrage.

Homeland Security
"The Homeland" emerged as a political concept in the wake of 9/11 leading to the establishment of the US Department of Homeland Security. The doctrine of pre-emptive war and "defense of the Homeland" are intimately related. Al Qaeda, the alleged perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks threatens "the American Homeland" with the support of the State sponsors of terrorism. The late Osama bin Laden was defined as the Bogeyman, the "Number One enemy of America" who threatened the Homeland. The objective was to sustain the illusion that "America is under attack" by Al Qaeda. Washington has a self-proclaimed holy mandate to extirpate Islamic fundamentalism and "spread democracy" throughout the world.

The logic of the "outside enemy" and the evildoer, allegedly responsible for American civilian deaths, prevails over common sense. In the inner consciousness of Americans, the attacks of September 11, 2001 justify acts of war and conquest, directed against the State sponsors of terrorism, including Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran.  In this regard, the post 9/11 "American Inquisition" as an ideological construct, is, in many regards, similar to the inquisitorial social order prevailing in France and Spain during the Middle Ages. The inquisition, which started in France in the 12th century, was used as a justification for conquest and military intervention.

The Global War on Terrorism (GWOT)
Terrorist acts are said to be conducted by non State jihadist organizations, which allegedly are supported and abetted by the governments of several Muslim countries, described as the "State Sponsors" of terror. Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were accused by Washington of supporting Al Qaeda. 9/11 remains the pretext and justification for waging a war without borders. In the wake of the NATO sponsored "Liberation" of Libya (August 2011), Syria and Iran, both identified in US military doctrine as State Sponsors of Terror, constitute the next phase of the US-NATO military roadmap.

Al Qaeda portrayed as a Sunni fundamentalist network is increasingly upheld as a global jihadists organization, a base, a decentralized network comprised of affiliated national and regional organizations.
The "Global War on Terrorism" is established with a view to defending the American Homeland as well as the "Western Way of Life". It requires "going after" the terrorists, using advanced weapons systems including nuclear warheads. It upholds a pre-emptive religious-like crusade against evil, which serves to obscure the real objectives of military action.

The American people's acceptance of this crusade against evil is not based on any rational understanding or analysis of the facts. The lies underlying 9/11 are known and documented. The evidence amply confirms that Al Qaeda was established with the support of the CIA in liaison with Pakistan's Military Intelligence, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

From the Soviet-Afghan war to the present, Al Qaeda and its affiliate organizations constitute US sponsored "intelligence assets" used in the implementation of CIA covert operations.

America's inquisition is used to extend America's sphere of influence and justify military intervention, as part of an international campaign against "Islamic terrorists". Its ultimate objective, which is never mentioned in press reports, is territorial conquest and control over strategic resources. The GWOT dogma was initially enunciated and formulated by Washington's neoconservative think tanks. It was embodied into US military doctrine. It remains part of a bipartisan consensus. From George W. Bush to Barack Obama it has become a central theme in presidential speeches and White House press conferences:
[George W. Bush, Septmeber 2001] "We've been warned there are evil people in this world. We've been warned so vividly. ... And we'll be alert. Your government is alert. The governors and mayors are alert that evil folks still lurk out there. As I said yesterday, people have declared war on America and they have made a terrible mistake. ... My administration has a job to do and we're going to do it. We will rid the world of the evil-doers," (George W. Bush, CNN, September 16, 2001, emphasis added)

[Barack obama, September 2011] "Make no mistake, they will keep trying to hit us again, but as we are showing again this weekend we remain vigilant. We are doing everything in our power to protect our people... They [the terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq] want to draw us into endless wars, sapping our strength and confidence as a nation. But even as we put relentless pressure on al-Qaeda we are ending the war in Iraq and beginning to bring our troops home from Afghanistan. The objective of the "Global War on Terrorism" launched in September 2001 was to galvanize public support for a Worldwide campaign against heresy. For the last ten years, an understanding of fundamental social and political events is replaced by a World of sheer fantasy, where "evil folks" are lurking.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Al Qaeda has established numerous affiliate organizations throughout the Muslim world.

Al Qaeda has mushroomed. Wherever the CIA is conducting counterinsurgency operations, there are Al Qaeda affiliated organizations including:

Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI),

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP),

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM),

The Libya Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG),

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, (which comprises

Al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, and Islamic Jihad of Yemen),

Al-Shabaab (Mujahideen Youth Movement) in Somalia,

Egyptian Islamic Jihad,

East Turkestan Islamic Movement in Xinjiang, China,

etc.

Wherever Al Qaeda has set up shop, the US has waged counterinsurgency operations under the banner of the "Global War on Terrorism". There are indications that many of these Al Qaeda affiliates were set up with the support of the CIA, using Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) as a go-between.

Wherever Al Qaeda is present, where "bad guys are lurking", America has an obligation to intervene on behalf of "the international community". The terrorist threat is used as a pretext to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign countries, including the sending in of special forces and the conduct of drone attacks, without an actual declaration of war. These types of operations are described in the Project of New American Century (PNAC) as constabulary functions.

In turn, large scale military campaigns have been waged in several countries as part of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). The wars on Afghanistan and Iraq were conducted under the banner of the Global War on Terrorism. Both the Afghan and Iraqi governments were identified as "state sponsors of terrorism".

The Islamic Republic of Iran is also said to support Al Qaeda. The Administration's pre-emptive war doctrine hinges upon this alleged relationship between non state terrorist organizations and their terrorist State sponsors. It is understood, pari passu, that the state sponsors of terrorism, whoever they be, are also responsible for the 9/11 attacks, namely for having supported and abetted Al Qaeda.

Che Guevara y los indignados

Un día como ayer hace 44 años fue asesinado en un miserable rincón de Bolivia, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, devenido Ché. 

No se qué hubiera pensado de la ola de insurrecciones y protestas que recorre el planeta. Un hombre tan idealista y noble que destrozó un sistema económico, se ha convertido en icono global.

En equívoco material de marketing.

Creo que el Ché hubiera disfrutado mucho con las oleadas del 15-M. 

Apuesto a que hubiera aparcado las ortodoxias marxistas, a las cuales tampoco era muy afecto.

De España a Bruselas, donde llegaron ayer los indignados. Y hasta en Wall Street. (Obama trató infructuosamente de hacer un guiño cariñoso, pero no coló).

Con su fresca manera de decir que las cosas van muy mal. Sin líderes carismáticos. Sin parafernalias partidistas. Sin máximos dirigentes.

Pues eso: cada generación tiene sus modos.

En vez de "Agrupémonos todos" de la "Internacional", pues "indignémonos todos", que la crisis es de verdad el fantasma que recorre el mundo.

Steve Jobs "in memoriam"

La primera vez que tuve bajo mis inútiles zarpas un Apple Mc fue en el Departamento de Morfología de la Facultad de Medicina, de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Estaba allí, siendo solicitante de asilo, y con una medio beca de 80.000 pesetas, por la generosidad de Don Fernando, el jefe de departamento.

Éste señor, padre de numerosísimos hijos, me entrevistó sobre qué había hecho dentro del trabajo académico.

Le dije que era de título "bichóloga", es decir licenciada en biología. Y que trabajaba en hipotálamo, es decir, neurosecreción, en la Facultad de Medicina en La Habana.

Luego supe que lo de bichóloga le había hecho cierta gracia. Don Fernando es un andaluz de pro y eso de "bicho" se lleva mucho por esas tierras de María Santísima. 

Don Fernando  me asignó a colaborar en el equipo de la doctora Carmen X, (omito su apellido por no haber consultado con ella este post) una brillante investigadora, incansable, meticulosa, a la que yo le iba muy a la saga debido a estar demasiado entretenida con un guapo novio a tiempo parcial, lo que dificulta la investigación de altos vuelos en neurociencias. Carmen, si las envidias y los tejemanejes científicos no lo impiden puede llegar a alzarse con un bonito Nobel.

Pero a lo que iba. Carmen fue quien me adiestró en el uso (y para mí disfrute) de una máquina Apple que ella acababa de traer de EEUU, y que se colocó en la antesala del despacho de Don Fernando. Había una lista para acceder al Mc.

Yo acaparaba todos los espacios posibles. Era tan sencillo y al mismo tiempo ductil. Lo mismo se podían hacer los cálculos estadísticos de un trabajo, que jugar a los marcianitos, o redactar de manera impecable las comunicaciones menos importantes. Hasta me ofrecía voluntaria para "pasar a máquina" documentos e imprimirlos ¡a color¡ .

Tal vez por tantos recuerdos sentimentales: el primer contacto con un ordenador Apple, con su manzana mordida, el novio guapo y maravilloso, que al final me salió rana, etcétera etcétera, he sentido la muerte de Steve Jobs co fundador de Apple.

Me alegro que se haya hecho millonario. Celebro que disfrutara su triunfo de joven inteligente y emprendedor sin título académico alguno.

El mundo mejoró gracias a su trabajo. Yo me siento en deuda con su genio.

Que iba yo a saber que detrás de esa maravilla estaba un joven que ni siquiera había llegado a sacarse un título universitario. 

Chapuza y ADN

Entre el 1 y el 2 de noviembre  de 2007 sucedió algo atroz en un piso compartido por estudiantes de la coqueta ciudad italiana de Perugia: la estudiante británica Meredith Kercher fue acuchillada hasta la muerte y violada.

Los presuntos autores de un suceso que levantó oleadas de crónicas periodísticas, resultaron ser la también estudiante estadounidense Amanda Knox, que compartía piso con Kercher, y su ex novio el italiano Raffaelle Sollecito.

Otro implicado sería el ciudadano de Costa de Marfil Guede, al que se atribuyó la violación de Meredith Kercher.

Knox y Sollecito negaron enfáticamente la autoría del crímen. Los medios de ambos lados del Atlántico se enzarzaron en todo tipo de elucubraciones. Juicios paralelos. Había tela por donde cortar: sexo y sangre. Hillary Clinton se interesó por el asunto judicial de una joven de aspecto angelical. Las niñas estadounidenses no hacen eso. Las señoritas británicas no se exponen a morir degolladas.

Se celebró un proceso judicial a resultas del cual, a falta de otras respuestas, Knox, Sollecito y Guede permanecieron en prisión 4 años.

Hasta ahora que un tribunal de apelación los ha dejado libres debido a un nuevos análisis de las principales pruebas periciales: un cuchillo, el enganche del sujetador de Kercher y los resultados discrepantes análisis de ADN.

Inicialmente parecía que se daba por cierto la presencia de sangre de Kercher en la hoja de un cuchillo encontrado en el piso de Sollecito. De la misma manera, se dijo haber encontrado muestras de ADN de Knox (sudor, por ejemplo, restos de células, no se especifica) en el mismo objeto.

Al parecer abría ADN de Sollecito en el enganche del sujetador de Kercher. Según los resultados de los laboratorios policiales, las pruebas de ADN vinculaban a Knox y Sollecito con Kercher.

Así iban las cosas cuando la defensa solicitó la práctica de nuevos exámenes.

Y entonces resultó que el material  preservado por la policía era insuficiente para que Stefano Conti y Carla Vecchiotti repitieran las pruebas de ADN. 

Como posible medida sustitutoria  Conti y Vecchiotti solicitaron revisar el protocolo seguido por la policía, dándole el golpe de gracia a la acusación ya que las prácticas seguidas  no se atenían a los protocolos internacionales.

Knox y Sollecito resultaron absueltos por el tribunal de apelación, tras apenas 4 años de prisión.

Knox abandonó Italia sonriente, con aires de estrella de cine. Su ex novio desaparació discretamente por el foro. Guede guarda prisión por el cargo de violación.

No pocos italianos gritaron "verguenza, verguenza" al paso de Knox y Sollecito.
Desde luego parece que la chapuza del laboratorio ha impedido que se hiciera justicia. Para eso también sirven las pruebas de ADN:para destapar la ineptitud. 

No se sabe quienes mataron a Meredith Kercher.

Los que investigaron el crímen se jugaron todas sus cartas a la búsqueda de rastros de muestras biológicas sin preservarlas debidamente.

Tal vez es cierta arrogancia tecnológica que aparca las manías de los buenos policías

El silencio culpable de los medios

What is the mainstream media not reporting? By Global Research

En varios artículos de "Global Research" se responde a la pregunta de si existen "guerras humanitarias". A juzgar por el elevado número de civiles muertos en lo que va de campaña  por ejemplo, en Afganistan, no es así. Pero el silencio de los medios de comunicación, que miran hacia otro lado, colabora a un panorama como el que describió Orwell en "1984". Vemos lo que quieren que veamos.Y vamos como ciegos.
In George Orwell's oft-quoted and insightful book 1984, we clearly see how this work of fiction has become reality, and in turn how reality is turned back into fiction through the manipulative, inaccurate and deceptive reporting of mainstream media. As Orwell accurately wrote:


"Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary."


Indeed, this is the "reality" we face when we turn to mainstream news networks, a reality coloured and created through corporate interests which reflect their own agendas instead of the truth.


For example, political leaders and the mainstream media continue to explain to us that the reason for NATO's armed intervention in Libya is to bring freedom and democracy to the subjugated masses. However, as Global Research has been consistently pointing out through deep analysis and on-the-ground reporting, the concept of "humanitarian war" is a gross oxymoron. As Prof. Michel Chossudovsky wrote this week:


"The objective of the NATO bombings from the outset was to destroy the country's standard of living, its health infrastructure, its schools and hospitals, its water distribution system. And then "rebuild" with the help of donors and creditors under the helm of the IMF and the World Bank." In Bahrain, Global Research Correspondent Finian Cunningham exposes how the West not only works against democratic principles, but goes to extreme lengths to ensure that their interests are not destabilized. Here is what the well-funded corporate media did not report about this week:


"It is hard not to draw the conclusion that the whole prosecution has been a vile fabrication; a show trial whose real purpose was to impugn the entire Bahraini political opposition. Disgracefully, in order for the US-backed Bahraini regime to achieve that objective two innocent young men are facing firing squads and five others are languishing for life in prison." Turning the lens to North America, Dr. Paul Craig Roberts minces no words in describing the bleak state of the economy, with Americans living in poverty while funds are directed into the coffers of inflated corporate and defense funds. And true to form, the mainstream media employs distraction techniques to keep people in the dark about where their money is really going and how it is being mishandled:


"US politicians, such as Buddy Roemer, blame the collapse of US manufacturing on Chinese competition and “unfair trade practices.” However, it is US corporations that move their factories abroad, thus replacing domestic production with imports. Obama ponte fino con Raúl (el Chino)

Por un motivo u otro Kuba figura un día si y otro también en las noticias.

Ahora han sido unas tontainas declaraciones de Obama, que  con lo de las próximas elecciones,desde luego no va muy fino. Afirma "querer salir de las tendencias de la Guerra Fría" respecto a Kuba, pero no tiene el coraje de proponerle al "régimen" una vía de conversaciones inteligentes para normalizar las relaciones. Como con China o Viet Nam, por ejemplo

Obama se erige en termómetro global de la democracia, cuando tiene su patio trasero complicado con múltiples guerras que no son para buscar la democracia sino la hegemonía. Por ejemplo podría colaborar con el gobierno mexicano para terminar con la violencia criminal que padece el país por cuenta del narcotráfico. Es un decir, vamos.

Da cierto repeluz que mencione la situación de Oriente Medio. Una evolución desapacible puede llevar a Cuba a una guerra civil.

El embargo es uno de los mejores argumentos del "régimen", y la mayor estupidez que se pueda esperar de la primera potencia global hacia una isla de 11 y algo milllones de habitantes.

Tachar a Kuba de país que apoya el terrorismo es otro de los crasos errores de EEUU. Si se refieren a los presos de ETA, y es que tal vez ni sepan que "era" ETA, los gobiernos de España y Kuba lo han dejado muy claro: se trata de asuntos entre dos países soberanos.

Kuba tiene que aguantar el oprobio de tener en su territorio una cárcel de alta seguridad que no es desde luego un paradigma en pro de los derechos humanos.

En Kuba, como en todas partes existen numerosas personas opuestas al gobierno de Raúl/Fidel.

Sería deseable que encontraran canales normales para incorporarse al  ejercicio democrático dentro de la isla. El término "disidente" sería historia si quienes forman la oposición se organizan y participan de forma natural, con su espacio para contribuir a la sociedad.

Si para eso hay que reformar la Constitución pues se hace. Y seguro que no pasa nada.

Por otra parte existen tantos y tan variados grupos, muchos de los cuales apenas constan de cuatro y su hermano. Hay bastante ansia de protagonismo, decenas de periodistas independientes, muy pendientes de Radio Martí. Eso no es precisamente vocación democrática.

La verdad es que hacen daño al tan traido y llevado concepto de respeto a los derechos humanos si se dedican al descuidado trapicheo de información.

En los canales de Miami se cocinan esos reportajes tan valiosos con novias de los hijos de Fidel, ex agentes caídos en desgracia, y todos los que por unos cuantos dólares encuentran su momento de gloria.

Obama anda en la cuerda floja y con Kuba lo suyo es un sí pero no. Por cierto Fidel dejó sus "investigaciones", para marcarse una de sus airadas "Reflexiones" .

Fidel le dió un buen repaso a Obama. Pero eso se lo miran en Granma internacional

Wather Rauff un nazi que espió a Kuba

El asunto lo ha destapado Der Spiegel, según documentos desclasificados.

Y no es que tenga mayor importancia excepto como punto para la reflexión histórica.

Resulta ser que entre 1958 y 1962 los servicios de inteligencia de la República Federal Alemana (RFA) contrataron, por la bonita suma de 70,000 marcos, a un sujeto llamado Walther Rauff para espiar a Kuba, en específico a Fidel Castro.

Rauff tenía un conocido pasado criminal desarrollado durante el Tercer Reich.

Este sujeto diseñó y puso al servicio de las SS unos 20 camiones con arreglos para ser usados como cámaras de gas. Él personalmente las puso en marcha.

Al final de la guerra fue a parar a un campo de prisioneros del cual se escapó. Finalmente se estableció en Chile, que fue donde lo contactaron para el trabajo sobre Kuba.

Llama la atención que Rauff debió comenzar sus pesquisas en 1958, es decir antes del triunfo de la revolución.

Der Spiegel no aclara si el siniestro espía estuvo operando directamente en Kuba.

Cualquier hipótesis sobre qué era lo que les interesaba sería un ejercicio de la imaginación.

Sus empleadores tuvieron el detalle de avisarle a tiempo sobre el hecho inminente de una investigación policial, para que se librara de documentos comprometedores.

No pagó por sus crímenes, de los cuales posiblemente nunca se arrepintió
