Cool Cuba

 Cuba

Colografía de Celia Irina Álvarez (2010)
"Go now before it changes" is the common refrain but Cuba is already changing. Legislation governing private enterprise is altering the visitor experience. Tourists have long been able to stay in a room in a private home – a casa particular – but now entire historic houses can be let. Suite Havana is a fantastic two-bedroom apartment with a roof terrace in Old Havana. Ydalgo's Penthouse, is a three-bedroom apartment owned by a designer, in the city's Vedado district – which also features chic Cafe Madrigal. Both accommodations are available through new operatorMiraviva, from about $250 a night. Casa particulares are changing too: kitsch homestays being superseded by stylish homes, such as beautiful Finca Kenia in Trinidad – a great spot to enjoy this year's 500th anniversary celebrations. "Now is a brilliant time to visit," says Charles Tyler of Miraviva. "You have the trappings of communism, with no advertising, and no McDonalds, no Starbucks and so on, but a better standard accommodation, really good food and new experiences."

Horteradas 2014

No tenemos identidad nacional.

1. Baking

For goodness sake, how much more goodness of the bland and wholesome Berry-knows-best can we take? Did Marie Antoinette die in vain?

2. Selfies

Just look at yourself.

3. Politicians' incessant use of the expression 'the right thing to do'

Used as a self-validating moral justification for everything up to and including coalition, invasion, food banks and knowing everything about us, especially what's best. They are, you might say, making right Kants of themselves.

4. Guys

Why are we all called guys now?

5. Hobbits

There's a third one coming, you know. Forgive me if I echo the loud groan of an occasional attender at meetings of the Inklings, the Oxford literary group where Tolkien would read his early drafts: "Oh no, not another fucking elf".

6. The expression 'nailed it'

Employed achingly often to show one is daringly au courant with the demotic.

7. Sanctimonious celebrities

Encouraged by invitations to appear on Newsnight et al into believing their ability to lightly entertain gives their views some intrinsic interest and authority. Thank you Hugh, Steve and the bloke from Friends. See also guest editors. Please make it stop.

8. Payday lenders

I do hope they know their Dante: he came across them in the third ring of the seventh circle of hell. "Their eyes burst with their grief; their hands jerked about their bodies, warding off now the flames and now the burning sands. Dogs in summer bit by gnats or fleas or gadflies, jerking their snouts about, twitching their paws now here, now there, behave no otherwise." And they have spoilt that lovely old word, wonga.

9. Twerking

Ah, yes, the inexorable progress to equality and respect marked by the example and struggles of, among many other redoubtable figures, Austen, Eliot, Fry, Curie, Pankhurst, Davison, Stopes, Greer, Malala, and, now, Cyrus. Twerking marvellous. What's wrong with the Twist?

10. Historians who use the present to describe the past

"Caesar is now faced", "England in the 17th century is a far different place" etc, presumably under the impression that it lends immediacy, accessibility and vitality rather than just being really, really annoying and tense-making.

11. Misusing prepositions

Can we all please stop having "issues around" misusing prepositions in the belief that it also lends immediacy, vitality etc?

12. Tattoos

So indelibly last year, so indelibly the preserve of elderly attention seekers.

13. Curmudgeons, grumps and dystopians who go on like this

Let's put it all behind us and literally start on a journey with a narrative leading to the big society, triumph in Brazil and a country that even welcomes poorer people and badgers. Who knows, by being in this together, and with renewed striving, we might get yet closer to the dream of lovely cupcakes, swimming pools in excavated basements, personal-number-plated Mitsuboyan 4X4 SS Landbruisers, large sofas with forward recliners, box sets of interminable foreign crime programmes and surveillance for all. Are you up for it, guys?

Happy New Year

Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC.

Great soldier.

Gracias. Thank you all. God bless you. God bless America. Please, tell President Obama to bring your soldiers back asap. Tell him to fight poverty. To provide American people with an universal health care system. To improve public education.
I invite you all to visit Spain. We have a great country. And you are very wellcome here.

"According to a new scientific study:
The scientist leading the research said that unless emissions of greenhouse gases were cut, the planet would heat up by a minimum of 4C by 2100, twice the level the world's governments deem dangerous.
The research indicates that fewer clouds form as the planet warms, meaning less sunlight is reflected back into space, driving temperatures up further still. The way clouds affect global warming has been the biggest mystery surrounding future climate change.
Professor Steven Sherwood, at the University of New South Wales, in Australia, who led the new work, said: "This study breaks new ground twice: first by identifying what is controlling the cloud changes and second by strongly discounting the lowest estimates of future global warming in favour of the higher and more damaging estimates."
"4C would likely be catastrophic rather than simply dangerous,"  "For example, it would make life difficult, if not impossible, in much of the tropics, and would guarantee the eventual melting of the Greenland ice sheet and some of the Antarctic ice sheet", with sea levels rising by many metres as a result. (Short abstract  from "The Guardian").

Liebe Shumi...

Aguanta Shumi. Tu puedes. Eres duro y valiente.Te quiero. I love you. Ich liebe dich. Je te adore. You are the champion of the world.

"Doctors treating Michael Schumacher, who remains in a critical condition after a skiing accident in Méribel in the Alps, have given an update on his condition after having carried out a second operation late on Monday. They said:
• There has been a slight improvement in Schumacher's condition
• The doctors are unable to say he is out of danger and the coming hours remain critical
• The first operation, on Sunday, was to eliminate extradural haematoma (bleeding outside the actual brain) and to reduce pressure
• On Monday morning Schumacher remained in an acute situation with intracranial hypertensions (pressure inside the skull)
• Doctors carried out treatments, which they did not detail, and there was a slight improvement which allowed them to carry out a controlled scan with respiratory assistance without further risk
• The scan showed signs which the doctors said were "unexpected" and they discussed treatment with Schumacher's family
• The scan had shown haematoma within the brain. One particular haematoma on the left was more accessible and could be eliminated without risk. Some haematoma were not accessible
• The doctors operated at 10pm on Monday to eliminate the larger haematoma in a procedure lasting two hours
• A control scan carried out on Tuesday morning showed that haematoma was evacuated successfully. The scan also showed other lesions in the brain
• The plan for next 24 hours is to correct a number of continuing anomalies
• This is a phase of stability - which was not the case on Monday - but it remains too premature to speculate about his prognosis
• There are no plans to move Schumacher back to Germany at the moment

• The doctors do not intend to update again until there is a change in Schumacher's condition or further intervention.
